THE ARTIST IS A MUSICIAN, THE MUSICIAN IS A POET, THE POET IS an ARTIST… THE CIRCLE UNBROKEN.
ARTHUR WOOD, FOLKWAX

Chip Raman earned a BFA in Woodworking and Art Therapy from Philadelphia University of the Arts but didn't focus on painting until 1996, when he moved back to Philadelphia after eight years in the Berkeley, California area. For several of those years, he was working on his certification in Expressive Arts Therapy at JFK University. When he returned to the Philadelphia area he fell deeply into painting, filling his home/studio with art from wall to wall to ceiling.

Artist’s Statement:

I didn’t start painting until 12 years after graduating from art school where my focus was fine woodworking and art therapy. It was after moving back to Philadelphia from California that an explosion of painting helped me stay grounded and filled the lonely void that was my life at that time. Inspired by emotion, over the past twenty years my paintings have been expressions of the human form in dramatic pose in surreal atmospheres using acrylic paint and color pencil on canvas and repurposed wood.I am examining my work as I see my inspiration moving in other directions. At this age, I find myself reviewing my past and my motivations. My painting is changing. This seems an apt time to consider a retrospective of my work perhaps to define or clarify its intent and messages. I still hold the same philosophy of art making that I have held all these years that is, the inspiration waxes and wanes and the artist must follow those tides. When I'm inspired to paint, I paint. When I'm inspired to play music, I play music.
